Small renovation projects that add character to your home

Making a house feel like home isn’t always as easy as leaving your shoes by the front door. In fact, if you’re my brother and own horrendously offensive work boots, I invite you to do the opposite.

When it comes to adding your own style to your space, all it takes is a few alterations. And the best part is—you don’t have to be a DIY expert. Here are a few small renovation projects that will give your home some character without breaking the bank.

Convert your spare room.

I hear you… not everyone has a spare room just sitting around. But take a moment to think about your house’s space. Do you have a large closet that begs for attention? What about your porch, desk, garage, attic, or basement? Dust off the boxes that are still there from your last move and turn the space into something far more exciting.

If you are lucky enough to have a finished attic with safe access and lighting—why not turn it into a spare bedroom? Or, maybe a hideaway for your kids to play? If you have a walk-in closet that somehow isn’t bursting at the seams with your wardrobe, why not convert the space into a boutique for yourself? Every morning you walk into your closet to get ready will be like visiting a high-end fashion store—without footing the bill.

Even if you don’t have the extra space, you can always spend a weekend livening up an existing bedroom or playroom. A little change can go a long way in re-energizing you and changing your space.

Add personal touches to each room.

Instead of focusing on making your house look better, try instead to make it look personal. After all, it’s your home.

Start by determining the personal touches that are important to you. Flip through a magazine, scroll through your favorite blogs, or spend some time on Zillow. Then, make a list of those decorations and see how you can replicate them.

For example, a little DIY string art project can liven up your space in less than an hour. Or, let your kids play in the paint and add one-of-a-kind canvases to your walls. You could also add some personalization to your children’s rooms by searching for Woood furniture & kids’ beds. After all, your kids should be surrounded by the quirky and exciting designs that reflect their personalities. That’s the key to giving your home character!

Invest in timeless décor.

If you want to give your home a sense of character that will last—timelessness is key. Following trends in order to remain relevant will only end up aging your home a few years from now. But if you focus on timeless details and personal touches, it’ll always look good—regardless of trends.

One of those timeless touches is nature. It never goes out of style! Add a few plants to various rooms in your home for pops of color and instant freshness. And you can’t go wrong with timeless staples, like a beautiful chandelier or vibrant lighting.

Whatever you decide, remember that the goal is to keep your home’s design clean, cohesive, and personal. And of course, have fun!
