New year, new word

The new year is always bittersweet. I hate leaving all the good memories behind, but I enjoy renewing my focus by selecting a word to represent each new year.

In 2017, it was positivity. 2018, focus.

This year, I really struggled to nail down my 2019 mantra. To help, I looked back on 2018 and tried to determine what I could have done to make the year even better.

Last year was a pretty wild ride.

We adopted our sweet son, bought a Scamp travel trailer, went on several camping trips, visited Las Vegas and Chicago, and continued our foster care journey by welcoming three more kids into our home.

But more importantly, I felt overwhelmed for about 360/365 of the days. I had way too much on my plate. Because, the truth is, I have a tendency to over-commit. I said yes to far too many things.

And I left far too much unfinished.

While I enjoy being busy, it took a toll on me. Toward the end of the year, I decided to step back from most of my extra commitments. Unfortunately, that meant leaving several organizations in an attempt to work on the things that make me happiest.

Looking back on the reason I finally said no reminded me of all those unfinished things. Books… projects…. crafts… to-do lists…

That’s when it hit me.

My word for 2019 is FINISH.

No more procrastinating. No more fear of failure. This year, I vow to finish something. Lots of somethings, in fact.

At the end of every day, I’ll finish an item on my to-do list.

At the end of every month, I’ll finish a craft project, blog post, or baking experiment.

At the end of every year, I’ll finish a novel.

Finally.

So, here’s to a year of just gettin’ stuff done.

What’s your focus word this year?

  1. We were challenged at church to come up with a word for 2019 as well.. after a lot of thinking, praying, and scribbling out what I wanted to achieve in 2019. I had 3 words Pray, Involved, and Grow.. I couldn’t decide and looked at the words and WOW…. yup
